Rare gray-violet diamonds are primarily sourced from the Argyle mine in Australia and are one of the most unusual anomalies in the mining process. Only a few of these types of stones sell on an annual basis and they are mostly in very small sizes, less than a quarter of a carat. The Argyle mine sold 17 of these stones three years ago and it was rumored that the sale was an accumulation of the last five to six years of supply.
Violet occurs in the range between ultra violet and blue and is considered a color on its own. The color violet appears as a different color form from the adjacent hues (blue and purple) on the colour wheel. There are only two known pure violet diamonds certified by the GIA in the world.
