Colored diamond buyers the world over are starting to realize how rare dominant purple diamonds in Fancy grades are and sales of purple diamonds are growing at the dealer level, with a selection of important auction sales over the last couple of years. They really only come from a couple of mines in Russia, where they only produce a small selection of purple diamonds on an annual basis, even fewer than pink diamonds.
Purple indicates a range of colors between red and violet on a color wheel. Purple with tints of brown, pink or red are spoken of as being warm colors. The range of color tone for purple diamonds is variable (mostly in lightness), resulting in pale purple, bright (orchid) purple, and deep (amethyst) purple.
