Blue diamonds have been achieving the highest average sales at the major auctions around the globe because the main sources of supply in South Africa are almost mined out. There was a time when the Premier mine in South Africa produced a small selection of blues but since the mine has seen production dramatically decline, very few new blues are coming onto the market. A small selection of gray-blue diamonds come from Australia, but it is rumored they only find three to four per year and most of the stones are well below a quarter carat in size.
Positioned on the spectrum between violet and green, blue may contain secondary color modifiers such as grayish blue and greenish blue. Alternatively, blue may occur as a secondary color modifier as in bluish green or bluish gray. Popular names for blue are; steel, sapphire, sea and sky.
